Kano River Irrigation Scheme (KRIS), is one of the largest and most successful irrigation schemes in the Nigeria. The Scheme (KRIS I) lies between latitudes 11 45’ and 12 05’ N and longitude 8 45’ and 9 05’ E about 30 km south east of Kano City.
The Tiga Dam is located on River Kano, 70km south of Kano City. It is one of the largest dams in the country and was designed and built between 1970 and 1974.
The Farmers: The involvement of farmers in the scheme management is dated since 1990s with the support of the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and in 2000 by the French Embassy. More recently, the World Bank through the TRIMING Project carried out an elaborated farmer organization, strengthening and capacity building. Water Users Associations (WUAs) were formed, strengthened, organized and capacitated in all aspects of leadership and O&M activities. The KRIS serves over 35,000 farmers and provides their sources of livelihood for their families.
This dam is the cornerstone of water resources development in the Kano River Valley in Kano State and Hadejia River Valley in Jigawa State. The dam sustains irrigated agriculture for thousands of hectares in Kano River Irrigation Scheme (KRIS) and other small scale farmer irrigation along the river system.
The Dam is equipped with three outlets as follows:
The elevation of the scheme lies within 440masl, with minimum storage level of Tiga Dam, the main source of water for the scheme, at 506.50 meters, which provides a perfect setting for gravity irrigation.
The Tiga Dam has the following features:

Kano River Irrigation Scheme (KRIS)
Kano State is the home to Kano River Irrigation Scheme, one of the largest and most successful irrigation schemes in the country. The Scheme (KRIS I) lies between latitudes 11 45’ and 12 05’ N and longitude 8 45’ and 9 05’ E about 30 km south east of Kano City on both sides of Kano-Zaria Express Road. KRIS I forms an enclave in three LGAs, including Bunkure, Garun Malam and Kura Local government Areas, with scheme headquarters at Kura town. It is located about 5km south-west of Kano city, on both sides of Kano – Zaria trunk road.
African Regional Working Group (AFRWG) was established in 2000 with the objective of promoting strong communications and networking among African countries as well as regional and international institutions for enhancing cooperation and coordination.
